Planning an outdoor project at your home? Make sure you put safety at the top of your to-do list! Before you start landscaping, adding a pool or fire pit, replacing walkways, or even some gardening work – consider some of these quick tips to keep both your family and your property safe.

Click Before You Dig

If you (or your contractor) are planning to dig, drill or excavate deeper than 15cm, use our free Click Before You Dig service. Putting in a request will map out any underground electric and natural gas lines (as well as water and waste lines) that exist on your property. Submit your line locate request at least 3 working days before you begin any project.

Don’t skip this step! Hitting an electric power line or natural gas pipeline can cause severe injuries or death, as well as damage or destroy your property.

Tree Trimming

Trees touching power lines can cause outages and pose serious safety risks. You're responsible for keeping trees, shrubs, and vegetation located on your property clear of overhead lines and hydro poles. Trees and vegetation should be trimmed back if they:

Have overhead lines passing through them from a hydro pole to a house;
Are leaning close to, but not touching, overhead lines or hydro poles.

DO NOT attempt to cut/prune your own tree if it is within an unsafe distance to the power line. If a tree is contacting a power line and is smoking, sparking, burning, or making a loud noise, stay at least 10 metres away and call 911. Planting

Before you plant a tree or shrub, look up! If it has potential to grow close to overhead power lines, choose a different location to avoid future safety concerns.
